Metin Lütfi Baydar has been a member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey for the Republican People’s Party (CHP) since 2011. He is a member of the Committee on National Education, Culture, Youth and Sports.
Mr Baydar joined the Turkish delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly upon his election to the Turkish Parliament in 2011. A member of the Assembly’s Political Committee, he served as Vice-chairman of the Sub-Committee on NATO Partnerships between 2013 and 2016. He was elected Vice-President of the Assembly in November 2016.
Mr Baydar is a medical doctor by training. He graduated from the Dokuz Eylul University Medical Faculty, and completed his residency in orthopedics and traumatology at the GATA Medical Faculty. He served as chief physician at the Egirdir Orthopedics Hospital and Afyon Kocatepe Research and Application Hospital. Mr Baydar became Professor and later Rector of the Suleyman Demirel University. He was elected as the first and only Turkish rector to the International Association of Universities in 2008. Mr Baydar was awarded a honorary PhD by the Odlar Yurdu University in Azerbaijan. He has published over 200 articles and 9 books.
